Stomach Tattoos

It might be winter in the north, but the beach is still the place to go! What better way to spend your sweet vacation time than showing off a new tattoo? At the very least, designing a stomach tattoo can take your mind off the snow falling outside. In this week’s article, let’s talk all about stomach tattoos! Men and women alike can enjoy designs in the area, although women will have to be particularly careful about the design area of your upper stomachs (or ‘the underboob zone’ ).

Stomach Tattoos Pain

Do stomach tattoos hurt? The short answer is yes. The long answer is that it depends on your own constitution. Be sure to keep up on skin care—which means getting all your daily vitamins—and stay well hydrated. Don’t go in hungover, or it will hurt even more than usual (read: How to prepare for a Tattoo). The stomach area contains many nerve endings, and the count gets higher the closer you get to the center of your chest. Even those familiar with tattooing may find it a little uncomfortable. That being said, you can get your tattoo in multiple sessions and request anesthetic cream if needed. I promise your artist keeps some in stock.

Lower Stomach Tattoos

Lower stomach tattoos hurt a little less than central stomach tattoos, so starting there might be best for large tattoos. People can see your lower stomach any time your stretch or wear a short shirt, but the tattoo remains hidden otherwise. This makes the area both a public art gallery and an intimate portrait of your individuality.

Side Stomach Tattoos

Side-stomach tattoos take advantage of the large, curved area to create 3D images. Designs with clear linework or realistic, colorful shading work well in this area. You will have to take the time to look at your design from many angles before getting it done. Try to avoid ‘cutting off’ important elements of the design when looking at it from angles you deem important. Personally, I would optimize the view from the side, rather than your front or back.

Stomach Tattoos to Cover Scars

These tattoos are much more than accessories to show off—they are works of art and helpful tools! Stomach tattoos to cover stretch marks from pregnancy, weight loss, weight gain, and more help to boost your self-confidence and enable you to show off your midriff like never before. Tattoo artists can also use stomach tattoos to cover tummy tuck scars, burn scars, and c-section cuts. For those of you that believe that scars are a symbol of strength (and I’m one of them!), you can also choose a stomach tattoo that complements the markings you already have.

Swallow Tattoo

Swallow Tattoo

The migratory swallow is one of the cutest birds in existence. No one can deny its charming face or beautiful feathers, and they show up all the time in greeting cards or home decorations. How did such a cute bird end up becoming a masculine symbol of the Navy during World War II? We’ll learn all about that and more in today’s swallow tattoo picture gallery!

Sailor Jerry Swallow

An old school swallow tattoo looks cartoonish and, with poorly defined feathers, large eyes, and a bright red belly. These classic tattoos represent much more than a bird, though. Sailor Jerry, an iconic Hawaiian tattoo artist, created their style and innovated with his colorful designs. Sailors would stop in Hawaii and get themselves inked as a souvenir, and Jerry would award them with particular designs for different accomplishments.

The turtle represented crossing over the equator, the rooster and pig meant good luck, and the iconic swallow meant the sailor had sailed 5000 miles. These birds winter in Africa, South Asia, and South America, and during the summer they take an incredible migration to Europe, Russia, North America, and the arctic wilderness. That’s why these birds also represent a return home. They usually flew over land, so a sailor would have good luck if he spotted one while at sea.

Swallow Bird Spiritual Meaning

Sailor Jerry made swallows popular, but the birds also have significant spiritual meaning. They carry the souls of sailors killed at sea to heaven. Their association with Summer makes them a symbol of life, prosperity, joy, and peace. Their amazing aerial acrobatics make them stylish and graceful tattoo designs. A spirit swallow tattoo reminds you to seek a peaceful end to any conflict. Some cultures used parts of the swallow as a form of medicine, since the bird is a protective entity. Don’t go out and kill a swallow for that, though! Killing one is very bad luck, and real medicine works just fine.

Swallow vs Sparrow Tattoo

Telling the difference between a swallow vs sparrow tattoo might prove tricky for you. Don’t worry, I’ll help you sort it out! The birds look almost exactly the same in black and white, and in color the swallow sometimes looks like a robin. The tail marks the difference between swallows and other types of birds. Swallows have long, trailing feathers on the edge of their tail, while sparrows have even tail feathers or tail feathers that peak in the middle of their tail.

swallow-tattoo-7

swallow-tattoo-6

These feathers help the swallow navigate and hunt in the middle of flying. They need to catch insects out of the air, so any acrobatic help they can get goes a long way! Some swallows have shorter and square forked tails. However, if the center tail feathers are shorter than the outer ones, you can be sure it’s a swallow!

Small Swallow Tattoos

Life-size swallow tattoo designs can fit on every part of your body. While you might be tempted to get one on your back or chest, don’t forget about the small areas of your body! Since your skin has a limited amount of canvas space, reserving large designs for your arms, legs, chest, and back can save you some trouble in the long run. Plus, few designs fit as well as the swallow onto these small areas! Here’s a list of some advantages for each little area:

  • Swallow Tattoo on Wrist – You can hide the wrist area with clothing for formal occasions. This intimate location is only visible when your hand is upturned—which means that only your friends get to see it!
  • Swallow Tattoo on Hand – People see your hands as an extension of your self, and when they see a tattoo there, they’ll know it means something important to you. This makes for an excellent conversation starter, and can help you share an important story of your life with total strangers!
  • Swallow Tattoo on Neck – If humans were born with their names predetermined, those names would be written on the neck! The neck is both intimate and public, so a tattoo here screams ‘this is who I am!’ to anyone who sees the tattoo. You can learn more about neck tattoos in our recent article!

swallow-tattoo-2

swallow-tattoo-3

Interested in these lovely creatures yet? A swallow tattoo represents almost a hundred years of tattoo history. From Japanese artists to American sailors to European icons, these little birds have touched the hearts of people around the world! If you long for freedom, a return to the past, a unique identity, or a tribute to a loved one, then a sparrow tattoo is a good place to start. If you’re looking for more ideas than that, we have a thousand more ideas for you to explore at InkDoneRight!

Tattoo Chair

the-best-tattoo-chairs-featured-image

Tattoo Chair Review

Did you like our tattoo table feature? Then you’ll love this one. Tattoo chairs for yourself and your clients can run you a pretty penny, but I sifted through Amazon to find some nice deals for you in all tiers of the business. Whether you run a small shop with just yourself or a business with several other artists, something here fits you perfectly. And, unlike last time, we focus on a few chairs just for artists! Sitting for hours at a time is momentary for a client, but the norm for you. You need to make sure you feel great while working your job, because let’s face it—sore butts are kind of distracting to work ethic.

Why Get a Tattoo Stool?

Every shop requires tattoo stools. If yours doesn’t have them, I’m sorry about that. Going in every day just to sit in the same old plastic chair wears on you. You should look forward to sitting down and working a job you love, but if your seat isn’t cozy, you can’t do that. Adjusting yourself constantly, in addition to moving your customer into the correct angle after that, detracts from your focus and the quality of the tattoo.

Planned properly, a combo of nice stools for yourself and good tattoo tables for your clients makes the experience more enjoyable for everyone involved. Some tattoo chair and table designs incorporate elements to keep your hands steady, keep the customer cozy but movable, and allow you both freedom of movement for especially large designs. If your shop creates a good experience for your clients, they will return and keep your shop in business. Every little feature of your shop counts, and comfortable chairs go a long way towards a good impression.

How I Selected Tattoo Stools

I picked out these stools based on comfort, features, designer reputation, and affordability. Great brands like InkBed and HomCom live up to their name and sell various levels of tattoo chairs and stools for you and your clients. On the other hand, not all shops have that much money to spare on upgrading their furniture, so I included affordable brands and designs as well.

What to Look for in a Tattoo Stool

Shops need tattoo chairs and tables from the very beginning if they intend to carry a professional image, but what sort of stool should you purchase? That depends on what sort of needs you have as an artist. A tattoo artist that frequents cons doesn’t need a fancy getup if they can’t move it anywhere. For people like that, portable tattoo chairs work perfectly! A small shop just needs one chair and one stool, and can get stand-ins for the other furniture required. A big shop absolutely needs hydraulic chairs and stools made for tattoo artists in order to offer the best experience to their clients and artists.

The list of different types of features goes on, but I focused on the most obvious ones to help you get started. If you need mobility, you need an adjustable chair. Small shop? Then you need affordable and comfortable seats. Large Shop or large budget? Go for the expensive ones, because they have lock-in adjustable tattoo chairs, stools, and tables that help you with work.

Portable Tattoo Chair

A portable tattoo chair usually sacrifices coziness for convenience. Available in plastic or pleather, these seats serve their function and remain durable during trips and at conventions. They fold up into an easily carried case that you can stuff into the trunk of a normal car with room to spare. For these chairs, their weight tends to indicate how comfortable they feel. Extra weight makes them hard to lift, so test what weight you can lift comfortably before purchasing.

Hydraulic Tattoo Chair

Hydraulics help move clients and artists without putting stress on their muscles. Pressurized air or water moves the chair for you. The relief helps your future health—especially when it comes to your back—and makes clients of all sizes easy to move. The hiss and pop of the hydraulic system also gives it a sci-fi flair. Barbers have similar chairs, and they serve the same purpose—making sure you can focus on work while keeping the client comfortable.

Tattoo Artist Chair

Let’s ignore the clients for a little bit. What about you? Moving around with a fold-out chair proves difficult when you’re trying to stretch your client’s skin at the same time. Keeping your knees, legs, and torso steady while kneeling or standing next to a client takes away from the attention and focus your inking hand needs. A seat designated just for you—and specialized for the tattoo world—ensures that you can deliver your best effort and highest quality tattoo to your client.

Amazon Tattoo Chair

With all of this in mind, I scoured Amazon to find these awesome tattoo chairs. No matter who you are or what you need, you’ll find something on this list that you need as a tattoo artist. If your wallet is empty, perhaps it’s better not to look…lest you be too tempted! This time, I wrote them in the order I found them. Use the features, pros, and cons to select which one you want. Of course, affordability is always a pro!

Massage Table/Bed/Chair from Best Choice Products (Includes Stool)

This simple set makes the perfect addition to any new shop. Most of the cost goes into a firm, steady frame that keeps the client still and secure while you do your delicate work. The table converts quickly into a massage-style desk, with a 6” hole behind the headrest for your clients to rest their face in. Clients getting back tattoos need to lay on their stomachs to give you full access, and this chair gives them a way to do that without hanging their head in a strange position. Including the stool in their item helps you with the shipping price—you only need to pay shipping once to get both the tattoo chair and the stool. Overall, this basic set forms a good start to a shop for a new tattoo artist!

InkBed Hydraulic Client Tattoo Chair

This beautiful chair comes all on its own, but it has plenty of features to offer your store. When you have a large customer and need to make them comfortable, the armrests and legrests swivel out of the way, and the frame holds them up. On top of that, the hydraulic system means you don’t feel the weight of your clients as you swivel them, move them around, or have them adjust their pose. You can opt for a stable base or a base on wheels to keep your chair mobile in your shop. The height of the chair remains easily adjustable.

TMS® 73″ Adjustable Tattoo Massage Bed Facial Beauty Barber Chair w/ Hydraulic Stool

The tattoo world doesn’t revolve around InkBed—even if it seems to sometimes. Here is a chair from a completely different brand. It has the same features as the basic InkBed, but comes priced more affordably. It also includes a simple artist stool to help you get started. While the features do leave a little to be desired, it meets all the basic needs of a tattoo artist.

Like everything on this list, the chair is larger than it appears online. How else could you fit clients of all sizes on it? I find that the arm rests flex a little too much when you place weight—or, you know, an arm—on them. For stuff like arm tattoos, forego the armrests entirely and use something else to keep your client steady.

Neck Tattoos

Neck Tattoos

We don’t really think about a person’s neck when we meet them. The eyes, expression, and body posture of a person speak to us before we notice something as insignificant as their neck. Neck tattoos change that. Wearing a neck tattoo creates an amazing display of your personality that becomes the forefront of every new encounter. First impressions last forever, and you can control that by thinking deeply about a tattoo design for your neck. An elegant tattoo makes you appear classy, while an abstract tattoo lets you look modern. With all that said, you probably know what today’s article is all about!  Let’s talk neck tattoos! We’ll go over the basics such as location benefits or the pain you can expect, and then go into detail about designs and each type of neck tattoo. We have over a dozen pictures to keep your creativity juices flowing as you search for that perfect design! As always, communicate with your artist to ensure they are on the same track as you. Let your mind explore every option so that your neck tattoo represents your individuality perfectly.

neck-tattoos-16

neck-tattoos-17

neck-tattoos-18

Throat Tattoos

Neck tattoos make for excellent first tattoo ideas. A tattoo turns your neck into an icon that communicates your true self to anyone who sees it. Starting off with a neck tattoo defines you and sets you on a path of expression. Whether you go on to get more tattoos or not, the first neck tattoo will remain a strong symbol of yourself. While we don’t notice a plain neck in casual conversation, a tattooed neck creates a focal point for others to focus on during conversation. The tattoo itself may even become the center of attention while you talk!

neck-tattoos-15

neck-tattoos-1

That’s why you shouldn’t rush a neck tattoo design. You must make sure it represents you through-and-through. An on-the-spot decision is bad for any type of tattoo design, but you should be especially careful with such a noticeable spot on your body. While you can cover most other tattoos with clothing when necessary, a scarf is your best line of defense, and it probably won’t work well. Unless you’re comfortable wearing turtlenecks and makeup, make sure your design is something you want everyone to see.

neck-tattoos-14

Neck Tattoos Pain

Throat tattoo pain also plays a role in whether you should get a neck tattoo. I’m not trying to discourage you from getting one—personally, I think neck tattoos are fabulous—but a throat tattoo is not for the faint of heart. There exists a neck tattoo pain scale, and the throat area is the most painful part of your neck to have a tattoo done. Tons of nerves run through your neck and make the area very sensitive to touch, let alone the sting of a tattoo gun!

neck-tattoos-13

If that sounds too painful, but you still want to get a neck tattoo, the back of your neck hurts less, and the side of your neck hurts the least. If this isn’t your first tattoo, then you should be fine. There are less painful places to get a tattoo, like your thighs or calves, but the side of your neck isn’t too much of a jump in pain level. Only the throat, with its hundreds of sensitive nerve endings, could surprise an inked veteran. If you can’t stand the pain, you might consider using a numbing cream.

neck-tattoos-12

neck-tattoos-11

Neck Tattoos Designs

Fashion tattoos for women match the neck area perfectly. Jewelry tattoos or vines wrap around the neck and give a very 3D look, even if the design lacks 3D shadows. Tribal neck tattoos for men work the same way. These fashion tattoos work so well because they take advantage of the natural curves of your body. As your neck curves, the abstract shapes curve noticeably with it, even if they appear ‘straight’ from another angle.

neck-tattoos-10

neck-tattoos-9

On the other hand, stepping away from the straight edges of a fashion tattoo or abstract tattoo can create optical illusions. A full-color, realistic design looks like it pops out at anyone who sees it, and the precise shape of your neck becomes obscured. These sorts of designs look different depending on where you view them from, but an excellent artist knows how to use that to their advantage.

neck-tattoos-8

Side Neck Tattoos

Simple tattoos on the neck don’t have to encompass it entirely. A simple design on the side of your neck or just below your ear draws enough attention to itself and makes you stand out just as well as an elaborate design. Signs, symbols, words, and any illustration in the New School tattoo style work well in this area. New School tattoos work so well in this area because of their bold lines and vivid colors. They create a pattern recognizable for many different angles. Any design with high contrast will work just as well.
neck-tattoos-6

Full Neck Tattoos

As I said before, throat tattoos hurt immensely. A tattoo that encompasses your neck will be taxing on your endurance, even if you have a high pain tolerance. Nonetheless, neck tattoos for men and women are well worth the pain. You can create a huge design that follows your body’s curves from many different areas. The neck is the most noticeable place for a large tattoo, and using this canvas is a must for any tattoo lover. You can pick an integrated design that wraps around your neck and extends downwards. You can also get multiple small tattoos inked over the course of time, forming a collage of your life history. Both types of full neck tattoos look amazing.

neck-tattoos-5

neck-tattoos-4

No matter what kind of neck tattoo you choose, it will become your call sign. When people think of you, your tattoo will be as prevalent as your pretty eyes or voice in their memory. Like a second name, your tattoo identifies who you are to everyone around you. You might be intimidated by the public nature of a neck tattoo, but just remember—your tattoo is a work of art that you share with everyone! Make plans. Make designs. Get excited. You can make this tattoo a turning point in your life—one that empowers you to be who you want to be and flaunt it!
